I never used to think about my wedding...

I attended another wedding last weekend. I’m pretty sure it was only my second wedding of the year I’ve been present at, but they’ve both been for the same family. First Jack’s sister’s wedding in April and then now his brother's wedding this past weekend.
This wedding was in Louisville, Colorado, about a half hour north of Denver in a cute little suburb. It was a Friday wedding, and we arrived Wednesday night to help and celebrate the event with family. Except there was nothing for us really to do until after the rehearsal dinner Thursday night when we put together the flower arrangements for the tables.
I realized it had been a long time since I was able to help like that. With me just running around, helping where I saw people needed it or where I knew things needed to be taken care of. The best part, I realized, was that I was letting family members catch up and chat while I helped those involved. I was not part of the family, and happy to give them time and space.
Getting lost in helping people clean up or do chores reminded me of helping my grandma when she would volunteer for funerals at church. Helping out at church always felt so right to me. I loved being able to help people and make their burdens a little lighter in a way that felt I was doing good, and expecting nothing in return.
I signed up to help make toys more accessible during a volunteer day in December, and I’m excited for that for multiple reasons. One being helping people.
Anyway, I was happy to be at the wedding not only to celebrate the lovely couple, but to help wherever I could. That’s what I was there for.
The wedding was beautiful and one of the shortest and smallest I’ve been to. But the couple glowed and the happiness infected everyone there, celebrating in a gorgeous venue.
I never used to think what my wedding would be like someday. I wasn’t one of those little girls who cared to plan her wedding when she was growing up. Only recently have I started to think that maybe I should pay attention at weddings not just for the enjoyment of it, but to remember ideas for my own wedding (however far away).
I might get some ideas about what flowers I would like, how I want my ceremony, and what food I think I’d like to eat and serve. What do I want my colors to be? What type of decorations would I like? What songs do I want the DJ to play?
Jack’s sister got married in April, but after the ceremony she signed and said “I want a wedding.” Her wedding was also beautiful, set next to a creek in the mountains in Boulder. That makes me think that even after having a wedding, it’s fun to plan a wedding. As long as you don’t actually have to do any of the planning and can just daydream about it. At least that’s where I’m at right now. It might be time to start a Pinterest board.
