Reaching adult accomplishments: a job

After months of trying, I’ve finally accomplished what every adult wishes to accomplish. I have gotten myself a job. 

 

Let me be frank, I did already have a job: taking each week’s news stories, photographs, and other items and using them to “lay out” the pages of this lovely paper. I’ve been having a great time doing so; it’s like putting together the pieces of a puzzle, but you get to create the puzzle. And I love puzzles. 

 

But because I liked it so much, and of course with practice, I was able to cut down the hours it took me to put together both this paper and the NRHEG Star Eagle. I was left with plentiful time on my hands throughout the week. So what better way to accommodate than get a new job! 

 

I started looking for another source of income months before I even graduated school in May. The only responses I ever received from my applications were either rejection emails or silence. 

 

When I knew I was going to move to Denver, I started looking for Denver jobs, again with no success. I thought it was because I didn’t yet have a Denver address and had to continue to use my Minnesota address. Who wants to hire someone in Minnesota for a job in Denver? At least that’s what I told myself. 

 

So I relocated and kept looking. As my number of job applications continued to grow, so did the number of rejection emails. Even Starbucks didn’t want me. At this point, it had been months without even an interview (although I will be the first to admit that there were points in time when I did not try to look very hard). Recently, finally, I got a message back. 

 

“Thank you for applying! We’re excited to learn more about you and your editorial experience.” 

 

Yes! Step one of the interview process for a company called Family Resource Group, Inc. involved sending video responses to questions they gave me. I sent back my responses as to why I should be an Associate Editor for their Denver magazine, Colorado Parent, and waited. 

 

It was two weeks later and I had given up hope of hearing from them when I got an email from the Managing Editor, asking to meet in person for an  interview. 

 

Finally, someone wanted to talk to me. 

 

Needless to say, the interview went well, and now I have signed on to be the Associate Editor of Colorado Parent magazine, to start working in November. Don’t worry though, I plan to continue to write my column and put together the paper, so you won’t be hearing the last of me. 

 

The only thing is, I feel like I should be more excited about a new job, no? Right now I’m more anxious and nervous. I don’t know quite what to expect, what the workload is going to be. Besides working at the paper, it’s my first real, after graduation, grown up adult job. One where I don’t have to say, “Hey, just so you know I’m going back to school in the fall and won’t be able to continue to work.” This one’s forever, or as long as I want it to be. Actually, the median tenure for those in their 20s and 30s right now is only 2.8 years at a job. So I guess I will see where this one takes me. Who knows, maybe in 2.8 years, I’ll want to move back to Minnesota.
