A small change in perspective

Fair week! I hope everybody enjoyed the fair as much as I did. I want to say thank you to everyone who introduced themselves and stopped by the Waseca County Pioneer booth; it was lovely to meet you all.

I have a love/hate relationship with the fair. Before my job brought me out for hours at a time, I never really attended the fair. Somehow, walking around for hours at a time during a usually very warm day was never very appealing to me. But working the fair is something different entirely. 

While I may be at the fair longer, it is for the most part more enjoyable. For one thing, I get to sit; besides that, I have a chance to visit with people with similar interests (the paper, obviously) and I get to take pictures of adorable children. 

I have to say that my favorite part is taking pictures for our “photo booth.” It’s just so fun to see faces light up when we offer fun and outrageous hats for people to try on. Granted, there are occasional people who don’t want to do it because they don’t live here, they say they’re not photogenic, or, as one girl graciously put it - she doesn’t want lice. 

So I turn instead to the ones who enjoy the experience and I get to enjoy it right along with them. Watching people’s thought processes as they start out wanting to be a cowboy, then a construction worker, then crown-wearing royalty, is entertainment all on its own. It reminds me of middle or elementary school when someone asks what you want to be when you grow up, and the answer changes from one day to the next. And then there were the kids who knew what a rotary phone looks like..and the ones who didn’t. We had two phones as props; it was funny to see the awe and confusion on some faces as they picked up the handset and experimented with the spinning dial. 

But now that the fair is done, it means I get to go back to my normal editorial assistant duties of painting the new Pioneer office, the former Ward House Brewery along Elm Avenue. I’m just teasing–painting is not a “normal” editorial task–that’s billing. But if anyone ever has any issues with their bills, that’s Eli’s fault.
