Constitution week declared in Waseca

At the most recent Waseca City Council meeting, Sept. 17 through 23 was declared Constitution Week in Waseca. Marilyn Wilkus, from Daughters of the American Revolution gave a short presentation during the regular meeting of the Waseca City Council Tuesday, Sept. 3. This year will mark the 237th anniversary of the framing of the Constitution of the United States. A press release detailing more about the organization and its goals can be found in this week’s edition of the Pioneer.
Aside from Mayor Randy Zimmerman’s proclamation, the evening’s agenda was relatively light.
An early access agreement extension until April 1 was approved for the Waseca Real Estate Fund. The group is working on a potential 70 unit market rate housing project at the city owned, “Marketplace Property” near Walmart.
The most lengthy discussed topic came from Chris Howard, Waseca County Land and Water Resources Director.
The Waseca County Weed Lake Harvester has harvested both Eurasian oil and Curly Leaf pond leaf from Waseca’s Clear Lake over the past three years. More than 500 tons, 400 truck loads, of material have come off of the lake over that time. The question before the council is whether the city would be willing to participate in the extension of the program which was initially paid for from a grant which ends this year. There was no formal request made, simply a presentation on the benefits of the program. Howard said anything the city can put forward would be greatly appreciated. The annual cost share would be about $40,000 if approved.
Michelle Oswald spoke during the public comment portion of the meeting to bring attention to a downtown walkway project. She suggested the city think more strongly about the project before spending over $100,000 on the project in order to sell the land to a Waseca investor for $1. Oswald asked the city to set aside a work session. Currently, the project is in discussion with the park board and has not been presented to the council.
It was also announced that Kris Markeson is acting as the interim public safety director for Waseca Fire Relief. At Waseca Airport, the T-Hangar project is moving along and is on track to finish.
The meeting adjourned at 7:37 p.m.
