Council looks at skate park, airport

The Waseca city council met in the evening of Tuesday, June 2.

 

During the June 2 meeting of the Waseca city council, city attorney Chris Kennedy presented legal information and local statutes on low power motorized vehicles. The minimum ages for drivers of electric motorcycles or E-motos is 16; motorized foot scooters is 12; E-bikes, 15; motorized bicycles, 15; golf carts, 16;  ATVs class 1 and 2, 16; UTVs (side-by-sides), 16.

 

Kennedy also pointed out it is not legal to ride any of these units on the sidewalk. 

 

Benjamin Possin, local resident, spoke of the Waseca skate park since he uses it frequently. Having heard the park is being resurfaced, he placed a request for an additional ramp to be installed, “and there is a large crack in the cement on the basketball side that needs tending to.” He also called attention to the fact Mayor Zimmerman used to be a skateboarder. Councilman Christiansen was grateful for the public comment, especially on this topic.

 

Business transacted during the meeting included approval of the city’s contract with the law enforcement Sergeant Officers’ Union Agreement through 2028. 

 

Council members approved a bid for installation of a Precision Approach Path Indicator (PAPI) and Runway End Identifier Light (REIL) at the city airport. Work is expected to begin in mid-June and should be completed within a month. The total project cost is currently estimated at $461,586. 

 

Also approved were a temporary liquor license for the Waseca County Ag Society for the Waseca County Fair July 8-12 and premises extension to the liquor license held by Katie O’Leary’s bar for a Car Roll-in scheduled July 16 through August 20.

 

The council approved Party Wall Agreements for the open lot along North State Street per Mike Jevning and Oscar Marquez. According to an online source, the definition of a party wall: “A party wall is a shared wall or structure that stands on the boundary between two or more properties and is used or owned by multiple property owners.”

 

During the meeting, Fire Relief discussed both the onion ring stand and the June fish fry. There is an opportunity for a full-time fire department event manager for anyone interested.

Councilwoman Schroeder reminded everyone of the Take A Kid Fishing event in Clear Lake Park on Saturday, June 6. Mayor Zimmerman mentioned Barefoot Lane Bakery has opened at 111 Second Street Northwest, sharing that the day he shopped there, the line extended out the door.
