According to the federal Health Resources and Services Administration (organdonor.gov), one donor whose driver’s license has “checked the box” can save 8 lives and enhance the lives of 75 more. Commonly donated organs include the heart, kidneys and lungs.
Corneas can help restore people’s eyesight.
Various types of tissue can be used to help cover burns, repair hearts, replace veins and mend damaged connective tissue and cartilage. These tissues include the middle ear, skin, heart valves, bone, veins, cartilage, tendons and ligaments.
Families of donors receive support and guidance from organizations like LifeSource. LifeSource names this goal: “Each day, 13 people die waiting for a life-saving organ transplant. A new name is added to the transplant waiting list every 8 minutes.
“Together with our partners, donor families, and community, we work toward one goal–that no one dies waiting.”
