SPRING CLEANING - The New Richland Garden Club's Barb Finseth, Kris Pfeffer, Stacy Bethke and Garden Club President Eleanor Schlaak were getting the garden across from the high school ready for spring on Thursday, April 9, 2026. Said Schlaak, "All our annuals are doing good so far this year." For those interested, the Garden Club will have its plant sale from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 16.
Garden club anticipates spring

During their April meeting, members of the New Richland Town and Country Garden Club planned for the upcoming planting season, including scheduling a work session on Thursday, April 9 to remove any remaining plant debris from the flower garden along Highway 30.
Each year, club members work collaboratively with the City of New Richland to plant and maintain both that garden and some flower beds located near city hall. Large sized planters displayed along the Broadway business district are maintained by a different group.
Club members are also working toward their yearly spring plant sale, set to take place the morning of May 16 in the New Richland city hall community room. Club member Barb Finseth reported the number of pre-sale orders for “supertunia” plants is among the highest the club has ever received. Preorders closed on April 11. Numerous other types of plants will also be offered during the sale.
As planning for planting and maintaining the club’s gardens continued, members discussed ways they might be able to increase the number of members–or at least to find individuals willing to help with planting and weeding projects.
A member offered to work with city staff to see whether the club might have its own listing on the city web page. Members also agreed to look into other possibilities and report back at the May meeting.
Those in attendance also discussed ways to improve the appearance of the large garden, proposing that either an interested volunteer or a lawn mowing service might be engaged to reduce undesirable tall plants visible behind the flowers. The plan to arrange the flowers in a way that would be reminiscent of an American flag was also refined.
