Majeski appointed to Waldorf Council

The Waldorf city council meeting took place during a tornado warning on a rainy and windy Monday, April 13. The next council workshop will be at 7 p.m.  May 18. The Waldorf Days committee will meet at 5 p.m. May 11; Mayor Rob Wilkening invited everyone interested to attend.

 

With the recent death of council woman Carrie Ferch, Wilkening swore in new council member Jim Majeski. Also new were three volunteers for the Waldorf Fire Department, Garrett White, Tyler Schnoor and Emma Novak. The council discussed providing the Waldorf fire chief with a yearly stipend, but only on condition the fire department be represented at every city council meeting. The council agreed to inform the fire department of this discussion and future opportunities.

 

The council decided to accept a bid of $110,000 for new playground equipment from Flagship Recreation of Lake Elmo, Minn. Other bids received were from Midwest Playscapes for $132,000 and Pro Playgrounds for $93,000. The park committee has already raised $48,000 through grants and fundraising. 

 

City maintenance worker Ron Fischer was given permission to sell the old sewer pumps from the city well house for scrap. A total of $3,038.32 was not collected for water/sewer, bringing the total amount of unpaid bills since the beginning of the year to about $15,000. Costs of operating the water system are covered by city funds, “But,” said city clerk, Sherri Sandry, “This account should be self-sustaining.” There were fifteen no pays with seven partial payments. There was a suggestion about raising the rates to encourage payment.

 

The council voted to send Mayor Rob Wilkening to the League of Minnesota Cities banquet  in Rochester in June.  Wilkening is a nominee for the statewide C.C. Ludwig Award, which acknowledges Minnesota mayors who have gone above and beyond the call of duty.

 

Barna Properties purchased the Palmer Bus building and would like to use half for storage and the other half for themselves. They requested permission to remove the grass in the back, install gravel and a chain link fence. Mayor Wilkening suggested performing a yearly inspection as a condition. The council did not vote on this issue.
