NRHEG School Board approves reports, sales

During their Nov. 17 meeting, members of the NRHEG school board declared the garage associated with the residential property at 302 Broadway Avenue South, which the district purchased in September for $70,000, as “surplus property.” The garage, at least 20 years old, has extended into property owned by the district since it was built.

 

With this official classification, Superintendent Michael Meihak is now authorized to offer the structure for sale. He informed the Star Eagle that his intent is to sell it at auction to the highest bidder, with the condition that it be removed and the ground where it’s located be left clean and flat.

 

Board members heard a summary of “comprehensive achievement and civic readiness (CACR) goals from NRHEG coordinator of teaching and learning Mandra Peterson. The goals and a report are required by the state department of education and include specifications regarding students from pre-school all the way through graduation.

 

Under CACR, districts must set measurement standards in “All students are ready for school,” “Preparing students to be lifelong learners,” “All racial and economic achievement gaps between students are closed,” “All students are ready for career and college,” and “All students graduate from high school.”

 

Approval was granted for a spring field trip to Costa Rica, organized by teacher of Spanish Joan Olson. Plans are ongoing, but board members were told as many as 40 students might be planning to attend.

 

Board members also approved the first reading of new policy 902B, which pertains to public use of the school’s outdoor properties. Meihak named playgrounds, ball fields, and open areas owned by the district as the types of property covered under the policy. Among the restrictions associated with the new policy is that exterior organizations will not be allowed to use the outdoor spaces when they are needed for school programs. Along with that, there can be no disruption to the school day, no use of motorized vehicles on school property, and no damage to the facilities.

 

The district’s required “Truth in Taxation” presentation is scheduled for 6 p.m. Monday, Dec. 15 at the secondary site in New Richland. A regularly scheduled board meeting will follow at 6:30 p.m.

 

The board’s organizational meeting for 2026 will take place at 5:30 p.m. Monday, Jan, 5 in the Secondary school media center.
