A perfect Waldorf weekend

Visitors to Waldorf this past weekend found the city jam packed with music, food, entertainment and just about everything a person could want for a wild weekend. The annual Waldorf Days celebration was well attended as it took place Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Smiles and community spirit were plentiful. 

 

On Friday, the classic car and tractor show had nearly 100 entries. The Batmobile was among the vehicles on display. A children’s electric  car race added to the mood of family fun. Awarded first place for the car show was Chad Groskrutz; second was Rick Kendall; third was George Morse. Taking the Mayor’s Choice Award was Derek Fetle. 

 

Regarding the Sweet Corn and Burger Feed at the Waldorf Community Center, Mayor Rob Wilkening claimed weather for the weekend “couldn’t have been better.”  He shared that the sweet corn feed achieved record attendance, serving 450 adults and preparing more than 500 meals. The musical group AZBY performed at Papa Olie's later on in the evening.

 

On Saturday, a vendor show and silent auction in the community center  ran from 9 a.m. until the 3 p.m. parade. During a volleyball tournament at Papa Olie’s, the entire field around the volleyball court was filled with spectators. The water wars took place before the food trucks got started around 11 a.m. In the women’s water wars competition, Frost/Myrtle took first place; Waldorf teams one and two took second and third places respectively.  In the next round, first place was taken by Waldorf team 2, second was Frost and third place was Waldorf team 1. Other participants were Minnesota Lake, New Richland and Alden. Charlie Barnes did a First Responder dedication near the Veterans Memorial gazebo with special guest Jay Dulas followed by a Quilts of Valor ceremony immediately afterward.

 

A kiddie parade preceded the main Waldorf Days parade which had 50 or more units. So much candy was tossed, children could barely keep up despite their best efforts. According to Charlie Barnes, “The band Los T performing under the gazebo of the Waldorf Veterans Memorial is kind of a big deal because this is the first time any band ever has performed there.” Jon Lucca, drum player for Los T, was spotted setting up his drum set and waved for a photo. MyGlobalDJ presented the preshow before IV Play came on stage later on in the evening.

 

On Sunday, to help settle things down for a relaxing week, there was an outdoor church service on the grass near the Veterans Memorial; residents were encouraged to bring their own chairs. Mayor Wilkening said, “We had around 100 people for church, it was a great turnout.” After the service there was a community meal of hot dogs and chips.
