Signing day

After signing along the dotted line, Waseca High School senior Tyson Reger committed to playing baseball for the Bethany Lutheran College Vikings Wednesday, November 9. A short signing ceremony was held between 9:42 and 10:02 a.m. Several of Reger’s teammates over the years attended and congratulated him on his signing.

A Division III school, Bethany Lutheran College has a well-coached baseball program and competes with schools like St. Olaf and Gustavus. According to Reger’s mom, Andrea, he decided to commit to Bethany because of that.

“When he was looking at schools to commit to, Tink Larson recommended starting with the Division III schools,” she adds. “Bethany Lutheran was the first one to get back to him, and he accepted.”

Reger played a few positions on the Waseca Bluejays’ varsity baseball team last season, from pitcher to second baseman. He had a great season which included pitching a perfect game.

“He gets his talent from his dad,” Andrea Reger joked. “I just did volleyball. But his dad was part of the Bluejays team when he was in high school and he also played for the Waseca Braves.”

Head Coach Taylor Phelps spoke briefly on his signing. “I am so proud of Tyson. He’s such a hard worker,” he said. “I’m excited to get back to playing baseball again in the spring where I can help him train for the next level.”

Reger was so ecstatic about his signing that he was lost for words. “I’m thrilled to begin playing for Bethany,” he said. “But I have to finish playing for Waseca first.”

In addition to playing for the Vikings, Reger plans on pursuing a degree in sports management. “I love playing sports, so I thought that degree was fitting for me,” he said.

When asked if it were possible that he’d coach the Waseca varsity team someday, his mother laughed. “It’s a possibility,” she replied. “He does love baseball a lot. You never know.”
