Student art show displays talent

WASECA, Minn - The Waseca Art Center recently celebrated the creativity and talent of young regional artists during its High School Art Show held in the Beckmann Gallery, featuring work from 36 students representing eight area high schools. 

 

The exhibit showcased a wide variety of artistic mediums and styles, giving students the opportunity to display their work in a professional gallery setting. On the final day of the exhibit, students participated in a special workshop led by professional multi-media artist Heidi Jeub, who also served as juror for the show. 

 

First Place in the three-dimensional category was awarded to Chase Gerdts of Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton High School for his sculpture, “Steel Prairie Sentinel,” a striking bison created entirely from found metal objects. Following the exhibition, the piece was transported from the Waseca Art Center to the Mankato Sculpture Walk for public display. 

 

First Place in the two-dimensional category went to Phoenix Machtemes of Le Sueur-Henderson High School for “Cosmo,” a white charcoal on black paper portrait of her cat that impressed judges with its detail and composition. 

 

The People’s Choice Award, determined by votes cast by gallery visitors throughout the duration of the exhibit, was awarded to Anya Gaona of Waseca High School for her watercolor painting, “Puppy Love.” 

 

Best in Show honors were awarded to Sadie Jensen of Blooming Prairie High School for her pencil drawing, “A Day in the Life,” which captivated attendees and jurors alike with its remarkable realism and technical skill. 

 

“Museums and galleries are not only places to celebrate established artists, but also spaces where emerging talent can be encouraged and inspired,” said Mikhail Rostislavovich, President of the Waseca Art Center. “Seeing these students display such creativity, discipline, and courage in sharing their work publicly gives us tremendous hope for the future of the arts in our region. We are incredibly proud to provide a platform where young artists can be recognized and celebrated.”
