Vada Dahnert celebrates 90 years

Local resident Vada Dahnert was the guest of honor at a 90th birthday celebration thrown for her at Waseca’s Faith United Methodist Church over the luncheon hour on Sunday, July 12. The many well-wishers were not only able to greet and congratulate her, but also to enjoy delicious food and cake along with a nice view of Clear Lake.

 

Vada’s eight offspring–Kathy, Doreen, Teresa, Dennis, Ron, Tim and Brad–were all present. Katie Dahnert, Vada’s daughter-in-law was helping out in the kitchen. She explained some of the food was catered while some was made by family members and friends. 

 

The church social hall was brightly decorated with many varieties of balloons and signs. Small children dashed about energetically. The star herself, Vada, entered the kitchen and was quick to say, “I have been surprised by the attendance here today, very, very nice turnout, more than I expected. My family did all this for me, that surprised me too.” 

 

She went on to say, “I also have 24 grandkids, a lot of them are here today. On top of that I also have 43 great-grandkids, but only 4 and one half great-great-grandkids. Four daughters-in-law, Anna, Darla, Katie and Dianne. And two sons-in-law Mike and Tony. My Jeff, unfortunately, is in Heaven.” She’s been a lifelong resident of Waseca, “Except,” she said, “when my husband was in the service. He served for 24 years and I was with him; we lived in Illinois, Alabama, New Mexico, Louisiana and Florida. I was married for 60 years, my husband Rodger, he’s buried up at Fort Snelling.” She pointed to the ceiling since she was in the basement of Faith United Methodist Church and added, “And I always come to this church.”

 

Those in the dining room who had already eaten were invited to seconds. A friend in a wheelchair pulled up and entered the party. Vada left to greet her, still light on her feet, she even bent over for a hug. Soon after that, another family member invited everyone outside for a family-only picture. Those with children began getting the kids under control and straightened out long enough for a photo.

 

Vada wanted everyone to know, especially her family, “I really appreciate everything you did to set this up for me. I am very happy so many people came here today. Thanks to my Chairman and to my Fisherman–You know who you are.”
