VFW helps mission get to Puerto Rico

An all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast at the Sweet-Sommers VFW on Sunday, Jan. 25, was held to support a mission trip being sponsored by St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. About 65 people had come through the line by 11:30 a.m.

Right inside the door to the VFW, the Commander of the place, Darnell Anderson, was volunteering for the day as the ticket taker, armed with his cash box and scratch paper.
Anderson told customers as they entered, “We’re fundraising for St. Paul’s Lutheran mission trip. This year they’re going to Puerto Rico, I’m not sure where they went last year. We’ve been planning this for a month or so. I believe they leave for Puerto Rico at the end of July.”
Two VFW members were volunteering to help out the cause; one auxiliary member was also on hand.

Barb Denn, who was in the Pioneer recently as she and husband Dave celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, was about to enjoy her breakfast. Of the young missionaries who were volunteering, she said, “These kids go to our church, we wanted to help them in their mission, and we were hungry, so it works out.”

Mandi Root was there, taking orders and bringing either French Toast or pancakes or biscuits and gravy to the people at their seats. If there were any complaints, they were few and far between. One anonymous description of the biscuits and gravy went as follows, “It was almost sweet, I’ve never tasted it like that before, I would eat it again.”

Recently retired Cheryl Brummond and Marsha Vollbrecht arrived, paid for their tickets, placed their orders and waited for their food to arrive, said Vollbrecht, “I just got done with church. I wanted to get some breakfast and support their mission.” Brummond added, “I’d eat here every weekend if they’d let me.”
