Waseca board looks into ‘Learning for All’

At their Oct. 1 work session, members of the Waseca school board took a closer look at one of the key areas of the district’s strategic plan: “Learning for All.”
Superintendent Eric Hudspith introduced the evening’s discussion alongside Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) coordinator Claudia Roesler. Roesler has been with the district for two years and works with Brooke McGuire, director of teaching and learning, to strengthen the systems already in place across the district.
The goal of MTSS is to better align people, practices, data and resources so students receive the support they need to be successful.
Roesler and McGuire explained that MTSS relies on a series of collaborative teams working together as part of a connected system. At the district level, the leadership team provides guidance and support for MTSS across the school system. Each school also has a building leadership team focused on implementing and supporting the system within its building.
Teachers work through professional learning communities (PLCs), where they collaborate, examine student data and look for ways to improve instruction and student outcomes. A student support team focuses on identifying and responding to the needs of individual or small groups of students.
Together, these teams are designed to create a coordinated approach to identifying student needs and providing appropriate support rather than relying on individual teachers or programs working independently.
The work session also included a discussion of the district’s 2026-27 vision card goals. Hudspith noted that the district will continue to examine several areas where student outcomes are not yet where district leaders would like them to be.
Among those areas are annual student attendance, the percentage of K-8 students reading at grade level, and the percentage of K-8 students performing at grade level in mathematics.
Hudspith indicated that continued examination of the data will help determine where additional attention and support may be needed as the district works toward its strategic goal of learning for all students.
