Someone in the Waldorf City Council must enjoy the TV show “The Office” because, for the second time in three months, there was cake for everyone in attendance Monday night, September 12, at the community center.
Or, more likely, DeeAnn Britton is well loved and highly regarded, since both instances of cake were for her. The first occasion was her birthday, the second, her final council meeting.
Every seat in the community center was full as Britton officially passed the torch she carried for nine years as Waldorf City Clerk. Tears, hugs, cards, a plaque, and many photos were shared before, during and after the meeting.
“You’ve been an awesome council to work for,” Britton said before adjournment. “I’ll miss you guys.”
“We’ll miss you,” council members responded.
The new clerk is local Waldorf resident Sherri Sandry who has been in training the last several months.
“I have no doubt she’ll do an awesome job,” Britton said after the meeting.
As for how she will keep busy during retirement, Britton smiled through the tears, “Canning tomatoes. Spending time with the grandkids. Traveling. Taking care of the pink school house.
“In a small town we get to know each and every one of us. We have a closer bond.
“I’ll see you at church,” Britton told 49-year Waldorf resident JoAnn Kelling. “I’m not going far.”
