The Waseca High School girls’ basketball team does not have to look far for consistent point production this season.
Kloe Wadd has it covered.
Wadd, a 6-foot-2 senior center, has been unstoppable at times and was again Friday, Jan. 21, totaling 31 points as the Bluejays blasted visiting Blue Earth Area 58-24 in the WHS gym.
The Bluejays scored the first nine points of the contest en route to a 24-3 advantage about midway through the first half, which ended with a 34-9 Waseca lead.
Three of the girls’ first four baskets came from Wadd, including the night’s opening possession. The Buccaneers simply didn’t have anyone tall enough to guard the center, who seemingly scored at will all night. Nearly all of Wadd’s points came in the paint, many of them on offensive rebounds.
The Bluejays, 1-1 in the Big South Conference, improved to 8-3 overall with a 67-20 nonconference triumph at Medford Saturday. Waseca won easily, cruising to a 42-12 margin at halftime.
Twenty-nine of the Bluejays’ points came off turnovers and they outscored the Tigers 44-12 in the paint.
The main reason was Wadd. She had another big game, finishing with 27 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 blocked shots and one steal. Also reaching double figures in scoring was Avery Madsen, a 6-0 senior forward who scored 15. She added 3 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 steals and a block. Others: Lexi Kanewischer 1 rebound; Callie Dufault 2 points, 1 assist, 2 steals; Sam Azure 9 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals; Ella Krautkremer 1 steal; Megan Kanewischer 6 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists; Ella Dufault 1 rebound, 1 assist, 1 steal; Addie Wiesler 1 point, 3 rebounds, 3 assists; Mia Kanewischer 1 point, 2 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals; Avery Gaul 1 rebound, 2 assists; Lily Owens 3 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists; Grace Guritz 2 points, 1 rebound.
The Bluejays shot 59 percent from the floor, including 6-for-17 on three-pointers, and made 3 of 5 free throws. They outrebounded Medford 30-12 while holding the Tigers to 27 percent shooting (1-9 on threes). Waseca had 9 turnovers, Medford 19.
The girls’ next action is on the road at Fairmont Friday, Jan. 20, followed by a game Monday at St. Peter.
