Father’s Day? Try Daughter’s Day

Another week in paradise, am I right? Despite the rain and haze, the fact is that it’s still summer and I’m enjoying it. 

 

The rain might have washed out the music and people last weekend from Hay Daze in Janesville and Heritage Days in Faribault, but that doesn’t mean the fun ended. 

 

Not that I went to either of those. Last Friday, I went to the Cities to watch the NBA game with my roommates and friends because they all started big adult jobs and I never get to see them anymore. We went to a cute little bar in downtown Minneapolis called Cuzzy’s. I loved the vibe because it reminded me of the bar I work at in Faribault. We walked in and dollar bills were plastered everywhere. The walls, the bar, the ceiling and even the disco ball. At my bar, we contain the dollar bills behind the bar, but the chaos of Cuzzy’s made me smile. It was a dive bar, which I always think is more welcoming and inviting than other classier or upscale gathering places. Give me small-town vibes, with all ages and close quarters, any day. 

 

But then we walked next door to the Basement Bar, which is what it sounds like–one of those classier dance clubs whose vibes are opposite to Cuzzy’s ambiance. You walk downstairs and there is concrete everywhere; the dance floor in the middle by the bar, fancy couches all against the walls, expensive lights, security guards walking around. No sign of any heartwarming small-town energy. Just concrete jungle, although I guess a change of pace is always good. 

 

And then of course, it was Father’s Day this past weekend. My father wouldn’t want to be mentioned at all, but how else am I supposed to publicly, and to all the people who read the Pioneer, tell him that I love him and appreciate everything he does for me, for our family?

But for our celebration of the day, we had him cook breakfast and dinner (we offered both times, he’s just really good at it and enjoys doing it). And then we went fishing, which is always fun. Especially since my dad recently got a new boat that is big and sparkly and really nice. 

 

I may be biased as I was on the lake and then drove by the golf course, but do a lot of fathers for their day choose to bring their families to golf or fishing? I know those are stereotypical male hobbies, and I also realize there are a lot of other things to do that fathers and men like doing, I just think it’s funny that that was what I noticed the most when driving around on that lovely Sunday. 

 

And on Mother’s Day, is the cliche to do work on the garden? Go shopping? I don’t know, I tend to make assumptions about things like any other person. And just like any other person’s, they could very easily be wrong. 

 

My mom spent Mother's Day at my graduation, so I have nothing to say. I just think it’s nice that we get to celebrate the people who mean so much to us in life. 

 

It’s a bummer we missed Children’s Day on June 8. Though August 11 is set aside for both daughters and sons, in case anyone is curious.
