School board discusses future

During their Jan. 22 business meeting, members of the Waseca school board learned from superintendent Eric Hudspith that strategic plan vision cards are currently in finishing stages and will be brought to the board at the February meeting. Hudspith also spoke about upcoming registration for courses for the following year, saying he is excited about the prospect of offering courses the high school had been unable to offer previously due to staffing issues. 

 

Three different math curricula are currently being piloted by teachers in the elementary and intermediate buildings to determine which would be the best fit for students. A decision will be made in the near future. 

 

Business manager Sarah Brandt informed board members the district experienced an overall increase of 13 students in January; there are currently 16,80 students enrolled in the school district.

 

Board members Grant Scheffert, Anne Harguth and Dave Dunn spoke about their experience at the recent Minnesota School Board Association conference in Minneapolis earlier this month. 

 

Hartley paraprofessional Lizeth Martinez-Ayala was recognized for accepting the position of assistant wrestling coach for the girls’ team.

 

Action Items included officially recognizing a gift of  $17,000 from the Waseca Area Foundation; the money is designated for student scholarships. The board also approved spring 2026 lane changes for teaching staff.

 

The board’s next monthly workshop will be Feb. 5 at either the intermediate school or at Hartley, depending upon logistics.
