Kids build on 'cool car' storyline at a Feb. 7 library event

During a Lego Story Time hour at the Waseca Public Library the morning of Saturday, Feb. 7, the room was split between 8 excited children who ranged in ages from four to six and the eight accompanying adults who brought them.

 

The format of the event begins with the adults and children reading an age-appropriate picture book. Afterward, the children grab cups full of assorted Lego pieces to build what they just saw.  The book for the day was  “Pete the Cat’s Cool New Ride” by Kimberly and James Dean. Those children in attendance sat attentively as children’s librarian Brianna Bleeker read the book, which was chock full of colorful pictures.

 

As she finished, Bleeker told the children, “You can come in and scoop up whatever pieces you need to build.” Every child in the room ran to the big, clear plastic bins containing the assorted Lego pieces. There were medium-sized red Solo cups for scooping. One child brought Bleeker a broken cup and was informed, “That’s okay, if you aren’t able to use it for scooping then just throw it away.” It is not known what the child did with the cup, but soon after he was handed a Lego base board to stick the pieces to and hold them in place.

The most popular item the children kept choosing to build was a vehicle similar to the one used in the story. Wilfred Jones, an intelligent and kind young gentleman, said as he attached pieces together, “I’m building this car and it’s powered by a power plant, and I am also building power plants for this car to go to and drive by.” 

 

His parents Jesika and Dustin were watching him construct his auto, starting with the wheels first. Said Jesika, “I found out about this event on Facebook, but regardless we come to the Waseca library often.” Referring to Wilfred she added, “He’s homeschooled and he’s an only child and we thought the more social events he attends the better.”

Dustin,  who does horizontal directional drilling for laying fiber optics said, “Yesterday we visited a power plant, and now Wilfred is all about power plants.”

 

Bleeker said about the story time hour, “This event has been here long before I got here, and it will probably be here long after I’m gone. The next session will be with children 7 to 12 but theirs won’t be a story, just a prompt for the kids to follow, and we always have room for more kids if they show.”
