Board spotlights retiree, staff update

The staff spotlight at the Feb. 5 Waseca school board workshop session was WJSH head custodian Mike Buker who has been with the district for almost 38 years, and who is retiring. Buker stated he’s worked with five different buildings and grounds directors and several superintendents, and it’s been a good experience. “I have a lot of ownership in this district, and I’m pretty dedicated,” Buker said, “ but I think I’m ready to go,” he laughed. When asked about the hardest part of his job, Buker’s answer was immediate; “I won’t mind leaving the pool. I’m tired of the pool.” Buker says he is looking forward to a fishing trip in Canada next month, and not using an alarm clock. 

 

Superintendent Eric Hudspith gave a staffing update for the 2026-27 school year. He said he does not anticipate coming to the board with any program cuts or adjustments for staffing. Julissa Garcia has accepted the position of Cultural Liaison for the district and Kyle Gallagher will be stepping into the WJSH head custodian position. Andrew Adams has accepted the position of director of business services and will begin full time in March.

 

Hudspith updated the board on the district vision cards; over 80% of students surveyed continue to agree that their school is a safe place to be, and over 95% of students in grades 9 to 12 are on track to graduate. The Alternative Learning Center shows improvement with 80% of their grade 9 to 12 students on track to graduate. Between 80 and 90% of families feel they are engaged with their child’s teacher, school staff, and the school community as a whole.

Hudspith reported the school district continues to establish and maintain active high-quality community partnerships with local businesses, higher-education institutions, non-profit organizations, and civic organizations that align with district goals. 

 

The next regular business meeting will be held on Feb. 19.
