Community Health on the Rise: year two progess

Waseca, Minn. – The Le Sueur–Waseca Community Health Board has released its Year Two Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP) report, highlighting progress in mental health and substance use across both counties. New data from the 2025 Minnesota Student Survey show decreases in Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and substance use among local youth.

 

Key highlights include:

Seven trained presenters now offer community education on ACEs and early trauma 

 

More than 5,000 mental health resources shared across the community 

 

First mental health resource fair connected 25 providers with over 100 residents 

 

Over 300 residents participated in community surveys on substance use 

 

Local Opioid Advisory Committees used data to guide funding and policy decisions 

 

More than 60 residents shared input through a community cannabis survey 

 

Public Health expanded education on ACEs by training local presenters and offering community sessions. These efforts help residents understand how early experiences impact long-term health. In the coming year, additional training on protective factors will provide practical tools to support children and families.

 

Access to mental health resources also increased. Information was shared at community events, partner meetings, and public spaces. The first mental health resource fair helped connect residents with local services and support.

 

Efforts around substance use focused on gathering community input and using data to guide decisions. Survey results showed strong support for prevention, treatment, and recovery services. This information is now helping shape local policies and funding priorities. Public Health also created county-specific webpages with data and resources related to substance use and overdose prevention.

 

Additional work included reviewing school and local policies, supporting student survey participation, and gathering community feedback on cannabis and tobacco-related issues. A public awareness campaign also shared information about substance use and available resources.

 

“The progress we are seeing is the result of strong local partnerships and a shared commitment to healthier communities,” said Colin Ayers, Le Sueur–Waseca Public Health Educator/Planner. “By using data, education, and community input, we are making meaningful progress in supporting mental health and preventing substance use.”

 

In Year Three, Public Health and partners plan to expand trainings, improve access to mental health resources, and continue using data to guide prevention efforts.
