April named Child Abuse Prevention Month

WASECA, MN — In a unified show of commitment to the safety and well-being of children, both the City of Waseca and Waseca County have officially proclaimed the month of April as Child Abuse Prevention Month. This designation aligns with the national initiative led by the National Exchange Club, which has long championed efforts to prevent child abuse and strengthen families across the country.

 

During separate meetings, the Waseca City Council and the Waseca County Board of Commissioners each formally read, signed, and sealed their proclamations, marking a powerful local endorsement of this important cause. The ceremonies were marked not only by official action but also by visible symbols of awareness and solidarity. Members of the County Board arrived wearing blue ribbons on their lapels, with several commissioners also incorporating blue into their attire. The blue ribbon serves as the national symbol for child abuse prevention, representing the community’s shared responsibility to protect its most vulnerable members.

 

Adding a meaningful and engaging presence to both meetings was Time Out Teddy, the official mascot of the National Exchange Club’s Prevention of Child Abuse program. Teddy will continue to make appearances throughout the month of April at community events, helping to raise awareness and spark conversations about prevention, education, and support for families.

 

“This is more than a proclamation; it’s a promise,” said Mikhail Rostislavovich, President of the Waseca Exchange Club. “When our city and county leaders stand together on an issue like this, it sends a clear message that protecting children is a shared priority. Prevention starts with awareness, and awareness starts with all of us.”

 

Waseca County Board Chair Deanne Malterer emphasized the importance of community involvement. “Seeing our commissioners show up wearing blue ribbons was a small but powerful gesture,” she said. “It reflects a deeper commitment to ensuring that every child in Waseca County grows up in a safe and supportive environment. We all have a role to play in prevention.”

 

City of Waseca Mayor Randy Zimmerman echoed this sentiment. “This proclamation is a call to action for our entire community,” he said. 

 

Throughout April, the Waseca Exchange Club will continue its efforts to promote Child Abuse Prevention Month through community engagement, educational outreach, and public awareness initiatives. Residents are encouraged to participate, wear blue, and support efforts that strengthen families and protect children.
