Letter to the Editor: Flag research continues

We’re delighted by the community’s interest in the 48-star flag and by the photographs, memories, and research leads people have already shared. Since the flag was found at Hodgson Hall, WCHS has invited the public to help piece together its story, and that research continues. Many differing lines of research have been presented so far from a myriad of researchers.

 

Last week, we created a dedicated email address—48starflag@wasecacountyhistorycenter.org—so contributors have one place to share their findings and staff and volunteers can carefully organize and review each lead. This will take time and is far from complete. Community members are also welcome to conduct research at the Bailey-Lewer Research Library on Tuesdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

 

This has been, all along, a wonderful community history project. We welcome anyone who may hold a photograph, record, memory, or other piece of the story to join us as we follow the evidence and determine the most responsible future for the flag. Community involvement, through volunteering, research time, collaboration, and becoming a member are so important for preserving our stories. Join us in preserving Waseca County's history. Our responsibility is, as always, to review the available evidence carefully, identify rightful ownership if possible, and determine the most ethical and preservation-minded outcome for the flag and the community.  We look forward to working together with community partners to find what's best for both the artifact, its story, and the community.
