10u girls take second

It was another beautiful weekend to celebrate the great winter sport of hockey.

The Tracy Rae Jevning Classic took place from Friday to Sunday, Feb. 3-5. The classic is an eight-team 10U girls’ hockey invitational tournament that takes place every year during the Waseca Sleigh and Cutter Festival. There were 12 games played throughout the weekend, including the championship, consolation championship, a 3rd place game, and a 7th place game.

The Waseca girls’ team made it to the championship round, but met their match against Dodge County and lost 6-1.

The motto for the classic is a quote from Mahatma Gandhi: “You must be the change you wish to see in the world.”

The first two games took place Friday. Fairmont took a 2-0 victory over the Valkyries — a coop team from the Twin Cities schools of Eastview, Burnsville, and Apple Valley. Marshall and Dodge County played in the second game of the night, with the latter beating Marshall 3-1.

Waseca had an 8 a.m. start against Albert Lea on Saturday. That didn’t slow them down at all, as they defeated the Tigers 7-1. Hastings defeated Austin in the next game 7-2.

In the championship bracket. Dodge County shut out Fairmont 3-0, with Waseca barely edging Hastings 3-2. In the consolation bracket, Marshall shut out the Valkyries 3-0 with Albert Lea taking a 6-1 loss to Big Nine Conference rival Austin.

In the seventh-place bracket, the Valkyries had the most lopsided game of the tournament, defeating Albert Lea 7-0. In the consolation championship, Marshall defeated Austin 4-0. Hastings overtook Fairmont for 3rd place.

Things started off well for Waseca when they took the first goal of the game a few minutes into the first period. But Dodge County made sure that was the only score they got. Dodge County matched that goal in the first period and did a lot of damage in the second period. There was a mini scrum which resulted in a roughing penalty ending a Bluejay’s afternoon and a minor penalty against Dodge County.

Despite the loss, Waseca’s girls’ hockey team can hold its head high for finishing second among some steep competition.
