Ohnstad leads Jays past BEA

Look up and down the box score for the Waseca High School boys' basketball team and it looks like a lot of people contributed in the Bluejays' victory over Blue Earth Area Friday, Feb. 3.

Or you might think Waseca just put it out of reach early.

The Bluejays, according to coach Seth Anderson, played their best ballgame of the season while blowing out BEA 69-35 in a Big South Conference game at Waseca.

"We shot the ball well and were fantastic defensively," said Waseca coach Seth Anderson. "Whoever won this game earned a spot in the final four of the conference tournament."

The Jays manufactured a 28-19 halftime lead and Anderson was able to play a lot of reserves in the second half.

For a change, Damarius Russell was not the Bluejays' leading scorer, but he finished with 18 points, 4 rebounds, 7 assists and 5 steals. Carson Ohnstad led all scorers with 23 points, adding 4 rebounds, 1 assist and 2 steals.

Others: Tyson Reger 7 points, 5 rebounds, 1 assist; Noah Thompson 4 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal; Deron Russell 4 points, 5 rebounds, 1 steal; Zach Hulscher 3 points, 1 rebound, 4 assists, 2 steals; Jacob Thompson 1 rebound; Addison Sampson 2 points, 1 rebound, 1 steal; Jacari Jellum 2 points, 2 rebounds, 1 steal; Alexander Honstad 2 points, 1 rebound, 1 steal; Tauston Rupe 2 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists; Andrew Robran 2 points, 2 rebounds.

The Jays hosted a tough New Ulm team and lost 68-62 at home Tuesday after leading 33-32 at halftime.

"We played well tonight, but not quite well enough to beat a really good New Ulm team," said Coach Anderson. "They had some big rebound put-back baskets to put us away down the stretch."

Damarius Russell totaled 17 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists, Ohnstad 15 points, 1 rebound and four steals. Others: Deron Russell 5P, 3R, 2A, 2S; Keeton 7P 5 R, 1A, 1S; Noah Thompson 3P, 5R, 3S; Hulscher 10P 3R; Reger 5P, 4R, 2A, 3S; Robran 5R.

The Bluejays play Friday, Feb. 10 at St. James, host Sibley East Feb. 14 and play Marshall at home Feb.
