Reger’s remarkable run paces WHS boys

So many times this season, the Waseca High School boys' basketball team has looked at sophomore Damarius Russell as the Bluejays' clear-cut leader.

That was not necessary Tuesday.

Tyson Reger picked up the slack. And then some.

Reger, a 6-foot-1 senior forward, was a perfect 12-for-12 on field goals, including 9 of 9 on three-pointers, as the Bluejays blasted visiting Sibley East 87-48. After research, WHS coach Seth Anderson said he believes the 9-for-9 performance on threes is a state record.

Regardless, it's impressive.

Reger registered 22 points in the first half alone as the Jays assumed a comfortable 52-25 advantage at the intermission. None of his shots touched iron. Everything was nothing but net. He also made his only free-throw attempt.

Reger finished with a career-high 34 points to go along with 7 rebounds and 2 assists. Laird Keaton scored 15, pulling down 3 rebounds and adding an assist. Carson Ohnstad contributed 9 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists and a steal.

The Bluejays had some fun Friday, Feb. 7, sinking 14 of 24 three-pointers while stifling visiting St. James 75-57.

"We were absolutely on fire shooting the ball," said Anderson. "It helped us get out to a comfortable lead and hold on."

The Jays raced to a 47-29 halftime lead and never looked back, totaling just eight turnovers on the night while improving their record to 17-5 overall and 6-4 in the Big South, including 5-1 in the conference's East Division. St. James, 0-8 in the West, fell to 4-15 overall and 0-12 in the Big South.

Ohnstad topped the scoring chart for Waseca, tallying 22 points while making six of nine three-pointers. He added 4 rebounds and 1 assist. Damarius Russell had another big night, totaling 21 points, 3 rebounds, 9 assists and 5 steals. Hulscher was hot from long range, drilling four of six threes while amassing 14 points, 4 rebounds and an assist.

The Bluejays broke open a close game at halftime and defeated JWP 68-45 at Janesville Thursday, Feb. 9.

Ohnstad, scoreless in the first half, led the second-half rally by drilling four three-pointers to finish with 14 points. Damarius Russell scored 15, Hulscher 11, Deron Russell 10, Reger 8, Keaton 5.

JWP's Memphis James scored 19 points, Daulton Bauer 14.

The Bluejays, 18-5, host Marshall Friday, Feb. 17, travel to Pine Island Feb. 21 and host the Big South Conference Showcase Feb. 25.
