On the road again, and again, and again

The Waseca High School girls’ hockey team had a very busy week with four road games. They went 2-2, shutting out Windom 2-0 and defeating winless Mankato West before falling to New Ulm, Marshall and New Prague.

Waseca 7, West 3

Montana Johnson opened the scoring 1:53 into the first period on an assist by Maizee Storey. Storey scored her own goal unassisted less than two minutes later. Two more goals by freshman Maddy Benson and junior Izabela Slechta gave Waseca a 4-0 lead after the first period.The teams split six goals in the third. Emma Keith score twice, Storey once.

Senior Alicia Kelly was the net minder, stopping 18 shots.

New Ulm 5, Waseca 1

Storey scored the first goal, with assistance from Keith and Izabela Slechta. From there, though, it was all New Ulm.

Goalie Ilamay Draheim stopped 60 shots.

Marshall 3, Waseca 2

Waseca traveled to Marshall Jan. 27 for a grudge game. Marshall stole a 3-2 win in overtime when the Jays hosted them earlier. 

It was the same result, but this time an extra period wasn’t needed.

Keith scored twice. McKenna Mortensen had an assist. Draheim stopped 28 shots.

Waseca 2, Windom 0

A quiet first period led to Keith catching the Eagles goalie off guard less than two minutes into the second. Katlyn Schueller did the same thing 1:29 into the third.

Draheim denied 34 shots for her fourth shutout of the season.

New Prague 8, Waseca 1

The Trojans were relentless throughout the game, and after about five shots on net in quick succession 10 minutes into the game, it was looking like a long night for the Jays.

Storey scored the lone goal with help from Cece Huttemier. Ilamay Draheim faced 56 shots.

The Bluejays end the regular season at home against Luverne Saturday.
