The Waseca High School wrestling team traveled to Kasson for a triangular Thursday, Jan. 26 and dropped two dual meets, 38-31 to Pine Island and 56-6 to Kasson-Mantorville
It dropped the Bluejays' record to 3-7 overall and 1-3 in the East Division of the Big South.
A Bluejay rally fell just short against Pine Island, which took a big early lead with a forfeit at 106 pounds, a pin at 113, a major decision at 120, a pin at 126 and a decision at 132.
Slade Barnett finally put Waseca on the scoreboard with a 7-4 decision at 138, but Pine Island answered with a major decision at 145 and a fall at 152.
After Andrew O'Brien claimed a 13-4 major decision at 160, Christian Rodriguez won by forfeit at 170, Carter Ellis got a first-period fall at 182, Payton Garza won by forfeit at 195 and freshman Matthew Veroeven pinned his opponent in the first period at 220.
It pulled the Bluejays within 35-31 with only the 285 bout remaining, but Waseca dropped a 4-2 decision.
Wins were tough to come by against Kasson-Mantorville. Ellis prevailed 13-4 at 182 and Garza took a 8-0 major decision at 195.
The Bluejays wrestled Thursday, Feb. 2 at Blue Earth Area. They're at the Cannon Falls Invitational Saturday and return home to host Worthington and Lake City Feb. 9.
