Waseca matmen take 1 in triangular

The Waseca High School wrestling team won one of two dual meets in a home triangular Tuesday, Feb. 9.
The Bluejays outscored Worthington 39-33 while losing 37-30 to Lake City. Waseca, which finished 2-3 in the Big South East Conference, ran its overall record to 5-11.
The Jays rallied to defeat Worthington after dropping the first two matches by fall.
Jacob Knutson put the home team on the scoreboard with a win by fall at 126 pounds.
After another loss by fall at 132, the Bluejays' Slade Barnett won 4-0 at 138 and Jacob Root got a pin with just 2 seconds remaining at 145.
The Jays forfeited the 152-pound bout.
Andrew O'Brien got a first-period fall at 160, Christian Rodriguez prevailed 7-2 at 170 and Carter Ellis scored a 4-0 decision at 182. Worthington forfeited to Payton Garza at 195 and Matthew Veroeven at 220.
The Bluejays could not catch Lake City, which led 37-0 after taking a forfeit at 152. But it wasn't for lack of effort.
O'Brien was strong again with a technical fall at 160 and Rodriguez got a second-period pin at 170. Ellis claimed a 15-1 major decision at 182, Garza garnered a first-period fall at 195 and Veroeven won 3-0 at 220. Jenaro Delgado received a forfeit at 285.
The Bluejays return to action Saturday, Feb. 18 with section team competition at the Rochester Mayo Civic Center. They're back in Rochester Feb. 24 and 25 for the section individual tournament.
