WHS girls top Triton, WEM

Although the Waseca Bluejays team enjoyed outstanding offense in the girls’ basketball season opener, their wins against Triton and Waterville-Elysian-Morristown proved how outstanding their defense can be too.

Neither the Cobras nor the Buccaneers could score more than 32 points against the Bluejays last week, resulting in convincing wins at Triton and against WEM.

Waseca 57, Triton 32

Waseca dropped the Cobras to 0-4 at Dodge Center. By halftime, it was 32-12.

While the Bluejay offense did well, the real story of this game was defense. If it wasn’t for a lucky three-point buzzer-beater, Waseca would have held the Cobras to nine points in the first half.

Waseca 63, WEM 32

It looked like a potentially competitive game Dec. 13 when WEM visited Waseca. The visitors kicked off the game with two straight field goals before seniors Kloe Wadd and Sam Azure replied.

It took a while for the Bluejays to get it together offensively before taking a double-digit lead by halftime. The score went from 11-10 in favor of the Bucs to 16-11 Waseca halfway into the first half, thanks to sophomore Callie Dufault supplying four points and Azure adding two.

After a 28-17 halftime lead, Waseca ramped up the pressure and aggression. Senior Avery Madsen scored three straight three-pointers to give Waseca a significant lead.

The Lady Jays improved to 3-0. They travel to Jackson County Central Friday, Dec. 16. The girls travel to Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial, a team ranked ninth in Class AA, on Tuesday.
