WHS gymnasts, 6th at Mankato, fall to New Ulm

The Waseca High School gymnastics team started its season at K&G Gymnastics in Mankato Saturday, Dec. 10. They faced six schools: Big South rivals St. Peter and New Ulm; Mankato East, Mankato West, Austin, and Glencoe-Silver Lake.

As one of the smaller schools at the meet, it was a tougher day for the Bluejays gymnasts who placed sixth with a score of 128.900. Mankato West was the winner with 142.100. St. Peter placed second with 136.000, Mankato East third with 131.525, New Ulm Area fourth with 131.525, Austin fifth with 131.525, and Glencoe-Silver Lake last with 120.800.

Despite being one of the smaller schools at the meet, Waseca was still competitive. Junior Hadyn Lynch led the team, tying for fifth on the floor with a 9.025 and taking fifth on the vault with a 9.0. Freshman Layla Keith took fourth on the vault with a 9.025.

The JV team had a good showing, too. Senior Katheryn Kofstad took first in the vault with an 8.75 and 8th-grader Angelica Lopez took third in all-around with a 26.05.

The gymnasts returned home Tuesday, Dec. 13 for a meet against New Ulm.

It was a great night for Layla Keith, who led the Jays in scoring, winning the floor event with a 9.225 score, taking second in vault, fourth on beam and bars and second in all-around with a 33.475. Senior Kara Doyle took 5th on the beam with a 7.5.

The junior varsity shared in the great night against New Ulm. Seventh-grader Maddie Root placed second in the all-around with a 25.5 and second in the vault with a 7.9.

The Bluejays host a meet against Kasson-Mantorville Tuesday, Dec. 20.
