WHS hockey boys bounce back

Sometimes, when you’re feeling good about yourself, you’re going to get humbled. The High School Waseca boys’ team got a piece of that humility when they took an 11-1 loss to Luverne on Dec. 3. 

However, it’s how you react to that humility that matters, and the boys responded by taking two games in the Big South Conference, winning 9-4 at Worthington Dec. 6 and shutting out Windom at home 4-0 Dec. 8.

Waseca 9, Worthington 4

The Bluejays opened with a goal 5:59 into it by Brayden Hesch-Priem. After Worthington responded with a goal, Kyle Ahlschlager scored the tiebreaker two and a half minutes later. Keaton Roeker scored his first goal of the season to give Waseca a  3-1 lead after the first period.

Ahlschlager opened the second period with another goal before Worthington got one in net 40 seconds later. After the Trojans scored a third goal, Ahlschlager completed the hat trick while Hesch-Priem scored his second goal 12 seconds later. Lucas Groll and Griffin Krautkremer added two to the Bluejay tally.

Waseca totaled 44 shots on goal to Worthington’s 24. Bluejay goaltender Eli Wetzel stopped 20 shots for a .833 save percentage.

Ahlschlager had a seven-point night. Charlie Cariveau had two points from two assists, Hesch-Priem had two points from two goals, Lucas Groll’s two-point night included a goal and assist, and Brayden Hoof contributed an assist.

Waseca 4, Windom 0

After what looked to be a scoreless game to end the second, Waseca broke it open with a goal. Who else to get the ball rolling than Ahlschlager?

Ahlschlager scored another 1:25 into the third period. Krautkremer scored twice in the third.

Wetzel denied all of Windom’s 32 shots on goal 

Krautkremer and Groll had an assist on the night while Ahlschlager had two.

Waseca’s record moved to 4-1. The Jays host LaCrescent-Hokah on Saturday.
